New Law for Transporting Houses

The government of Belize imposed a new law last week on house builders and transporters; they can no longer move houses in the daytime. Transportation of houses on public roads can only be done between 9PM and 4AM. Notably this might lead to a higher cost for the customer but in the end the buyer has no choice. Based on reports, police sometimes clashed with the Mennonites who are the major house builders in the country; some cops insisted it be done at night then at night other cops complained that it should be performed only in the daytime which has caused some Mennonites no end of headache. Finally the government made up its mind.

The Cannabis Referendum

This week, a historic event will occur in the country of Belize. A referendum will be held to determine if Caye Caulker, a tiny but internationally popular island, should move forward with their proposal to legalize the controlled use of cannabis, specifically in regards to its medicinal aspects. According to Kareem Musa, Minister of New Growth Industries, the proposal would then move to the Cabinet, then to the House of Representatives, and finally the Senate. While there are many open-minded politicians and doctors in favor, there are also the churches against it. This weekend will see what Belizeans chose.

Armed Robbery in Blackman Eddy Village

Mennonite businessmen from Orange Walk were the victims of an armed assault in BlackMan Eddy Village, near Spanish Lookout by the Iguana Creek junction. According to a report the Mennonites stopped to refuel their vehicle during which time unkown men approached them and demanded money. One of the victims attempted to flee but was injured from shots fired at him by one of the robbers. He then complied and handed over a bag of money containing several thousand dollars. The robbers then escaped.

Shooting in Belmopan

Salvatore Lopes, Laura Fiorito and their two children Megan (Klassen) Petkau A shooting on Tuesday afternoon in the capital has left surrounding communities reeling and the whole nation of Belize in shock at the absolutely senseless and cold-blooded targeting of a family who were enjoying ice cream near the market square. According to multiple sources, a couple from Agua Viva, a rural community a few miles away from Belmopan which is composed of ex-Mennonites, practicing Mennonites and various immigrants from Europe, were at the marketplace in Belmopan. Along with the couple and their two children was a little girl, the daughter of a friend from the same community.
